The Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental tombs. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest and most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Work began in 1844 and was opened 7 years later on January 2nd, 1851. Over time there were several extensions and the cemetery now includes sections for an English cemetery, as well as Protestant and a Jewish sections. For 70-80′s music scholars, the opening shot is of the The Appiani family tomb, used for the cover of Joy Division’s LP Closer - shot 3 is the tomb used for the Love Will Tear Us Apart single. Thanks to all the photographers of these beautiful shots.
