Gil Rigoulet – Rockabilly ’82

From photographer Gil Rigoulet – “For four months, I followed Marco, Raynald, Michel, Éric, Boumé, Lionel, Titi, Denis, Alan, Jimmy, Laurent, Bouboule, and others, at home in their bedrooms, at work, in the King Bee record shop, at the market where they’d buy their outfits, and on their nights out. The boys all dreamed of moving to the United States and listening to Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley, and Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers. They usually met up at the Liberty Bar, which dated back to the time when American air forces were based at Evreux in the early years of the Cold War. They hung out in parking lots where they repaired their classic cars—French Simcas, not Chevys”.

“Over the course of a few months, I went from being a photojournalist interested in them as subjects to someone they knew well; they invited me over to their houses, and I’d have lunch with their parents. After a while, they even invited me to come along to their hair appointments. Their salon was owned by Mr. Tuffier—a man who always wore glasses, a goatee, and a wide tie with a floral print. That was an honor: Mr. Tuffier was the quiffmaster of Evreux, so a visit to him was the most sacred of their activities”.

Chicago Gang Cards

Apparently in the 70’s and 80’s in Chicago (and probably else wear) gangs carried with them a nice little bit of PR – calling cards. These come from the days when a gang was more of a neighborhood crew then what it has become.  These were the days of “fists, bats, and bottles” rather than AK-47s and drive-bys. Most of the gangs were just about the neighborhood and hanging out. Though I don’t think I’d trust The Almighty Gaylords or the Gaylordettes if I wondered into their turf.

The Bullet Bra – 1950’s Pin-up Necessity

The bullet bra was created by the Maidenform Company in the 1940’s, but with the war raging it didn’t and couldn’t (war time restrictions on nylon) become popular until the mid 1950’s. Every actress, pin-up and girl on the street just had to wear this newest fashion. Women were getting some well deserved freedoms after the war and with all the men back in the States, sex and being sexy was back in style. Sometimes super-sexy, sometimes just plain weird, the bullet bra became the look of the 50’s – the Sweater Girl, Jane Mansfield, Marilyn Monroe and The Outlaw. Never being a fan of the “Pointy Breast” I don’t quite get it. But really, what’s to get? Everybody loves boobs and the bullet bra sure gave you something to look at and dream about.

E. J. Bellocq and the Prostitutes of Storyville

John Ernest Joseph Bellocq (1873–1949) E. J. Bellocq and his work is a mystery. Making his living mostly by taking photographs of landmarks, ships and machinery for local companies, he also had a secret photographic life, taking personal photographs of the hidden side of local life, notably the opium dens and the prostitutes of Storyville. Bellocq, sometime described as a hunchbacked dwarf and others a nattily dressed dandy, lived alone and acquired a reputation for eccentricity and unfriendliness. After taking his professional daily routine, Bellocq would haunt the houses of prostitution in the then legal area of New Orleans French Quarter called Storyville. His photographs of the working girls showed a certain beauty and respect of the models, and are exceptionally striking. However, no one got to see these photos until well after his death in 1949. Destroying most of his negatives prior to his death, his Storyville photos were later found in a local junk shop, by a young photographer named Lee Friedlander who would eventually mount a well received show of the work and also publish the books Storyville Portraits and Bellocq: Photographs from Storyville, assuring his fameThe last part of the mystery – who scratched out the faces on some of the portraits? Some say his Jesuit priest brother was the culprit, others say Bellocq himself as his madness progressed toward his death. No one knows who or why. All-in-all, a great story, a great mystery and some beautiful photographs.

The Classy Lassie with the Tattooed Chassis – Cindy Ray

Bev Robinson, best known as Cindy Ray, was one of the first tattooed pinup girls of Australia. She spent most of her life working as a respected tattoo artist.
In the early 1960s, photographs of a heavily tattooed woman from Australia called Cindy Ray started appearing. She was blonde and beautiful with tattoos on her arms, chest, back and legs and soon became known as “the classy lassie with the tattooed chassis”.
She was talked into getting tattooed at 19, and despite having no examples of tattooed people in her family and being a farm worker, she got 4 tattoos on the first night. She still doesn’t know how she was convinced that she could make money touring the country as a tattooed model, but she did and that made her what she is today.

The Forgotten Doll – Jerry Nolan

Gerard “Jerry” Nolan (May 7, 1946 – January 14, 1992)                                                                                                                           It didn’t matter what they made him wear, as long as he got to drum for the Dolls and hang with his friend Johnny he was happy. By all accounts, a pretty happy-go-lucky guy, Jerry was a tough as shit street kid who (long story short) joined the New York Dolls in 1972 after the death of original drummer Billy Murcia. Always looking a bit non-plussed in his teased hair and tiny Doll clothes (though nowhere near as out of place as Arthur “Killer” Kane), Jerry could drum like a house on fire.

Nolan would leave the Dolls in 1975 along w/ Johnny Thunders to form the Heartbreakers (not the Tom Petty version), move to England and embark on the infamous Anarchy in the UK tour along w/ the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. It was Jerry and Johnny who introduced heroin to the UK punk scene causing untold problems with among others, poor stupid Sid Vicious. Jerry would quit the Heartbreakers in 77′ and kick around England for a few years playing w/ various punk outfits, eventually landing in Sweden for awhile before moving back to New York in the late 80’s. After years of heroin addiction Jerry would die of Bacterial Meningitis coupled with a stroke, in 1992, only 2 months after his buddy Johnny’s death in New Orleans. He is buried at Mount Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing NY.

Vogue Picture Discs

Vogue picture records were produced by Sav-Way Industries of Detroit, Michigan from 1946 to 1947 (before they went out of business) – there are only 74 different discs. The 10″ discs were created by sandwiching an illustration between 2 clear pieces of vinyl. The picture would usually have something to do with the song – though sometimes a tad obscure. The songs for the most part were war era mushy ballads sung by obscure big band crooners – no Sinatra, no Bing Crosby. They were more along the lines of The Don Large Chorus, Shep Fields and LuLu Belle & Scotty – big names all. The illustrations however make these discs quite beautiful and cool little collectors items. They’re not worth a ton, some more collectable than others, they are however a great look into 40’s entertainment and design.

Fairuza Balk (born May 21, 1974) That smile, those eyes. Fairuza (Turquoise in Farsi) began her career as Dorothy Gale in the unofficial sequel to Wizard of Oz – 1985’s Return to Oz. She became a teenage Satan worshipper in The Craft, a cat-thing in The Island of Dr. Moreau w/ Marlon Brando, an Academy Award nominated skin head in American History X, a groupie in Almost Famous and a bad girl to Adam Sandler’s simpleton in The Waterboy (among many others) Wildly different roles, great co-stars and what appears to be a simple non-Hollywood like life, Fairuza continues to act and do voice work for cartoons and video games … and she still has that smile.

Emanuele Taglietti and Italian Sex, Horror Comics

Emanuele Taglietti (born 1943) Emanuele started his career as an set designer for his famous cousin – director Michelangelo Antonioni (Blowup). he would go on to work as an assistant director for Federico Fellini and Dino Rissi until the lure of Italian sex art game calling. The 1970’s saw the rise in popularity of digest sized graphic books called fumetti – whose main themes were sex, horror and violence. And man-o-man did he jump on that firetruck. He would create about 10 covers a month each weirder, more troubling than the next. An odd mix of monsters, violence against and by woman and a disturbing rapey vibe made these huge in Italy until the mid-80’s. With the fumetti’s popularity on the wane Taglietti would become a teacher of ‘decoration’ and mural conservation. In 2000 he stopped teaching and has focused on painting murals and watercolors – hopefully w/ some different themes than his fumetti work.

David Bowie – Behind the Scenes of The Man Who Fell to Earth

The Man Who Fell to Earth – 1976. David Bowie was at the height of his career having just released his brilliant blue-eyed soul LP, Young Americans. He was riding high on the hit Fame and ready to take over the world. The next logical step – movies. And what a movie. The casting of Bowie as an alien who crashed on Earth and can’t get back to his dead planet was perfect. Lean bordering on skinny Bowie looked the part w/ a shock of red/orange hair and other-worldly style. The film did well and Bowie was great. Looking back at it today its a bit dated and frankly kind of boring, but, Jesus, he looked great, and by the looks of things it was a fun set.

Harry Dean Stanton (July 14, 1926 – September 15, 2017) with a career that lasted over 60 years, Harry Dean Stanton went from character actor w/ small rolls in mostly westerns to an unlikely leading man in his late 50’s. You’d always know that even if it was a bad movie it had a chance if Harry Dean was in it. Painted jackets have a great and important history. The Airman of World War 2 would paint there coats w/ flight symbolism, a girlfriend, pinup or film star. Motorcycle Clubs would either patch or paint there ‘cuts’ w/ logos. The hippies, well the hippies would paint anything and everything on their clothes. It encapsulates history and style and trends. As I love to paint – primarily portraits, I thought why not turn vintage jackets into walking pieces of art.The jackets shown below are all from 2018. All hand painted w/ acrylic on either leather or denim. If you’d like a commission please inquire. All items listed as For Sale are various sizes and prices, so ask about those too.

Bruce Gilden (1946) is a New York based street photographer best known for his extreme spontaneous portraiture. Crooked faces, bad skin, bad teeth, scars and dirt all are all represented right up front in Mr Gilden’s amazing photography. His first major project was of people at Coney Island, (seen in a couple of theses shots). He has photographed people on the streets of New York, Japanese Yakuza, mobsters, homeless people, prostitutes, and members of bike gangs.

Wayne Cochran and his Fabulous White Pompadour

Talvin Wayne Cochran (May 10, 1939 – November 21, 2017) aka, The White Knight of Soul.

Influenced by the country and RNB, Cochran fronted his first band – a group called the Rockin’ Capris – as a teenager, and eventually left high school to pursue music as a full-time career. He relocated to Macon, GA where he befriended Otis Redding (playing bass guitar on Redding’s early recording of “Shout Bamalama” and its B-side, “Fat Girl”) and recorded his first single, “The Coo”, which attracted the attention of King Records. Cochran became close friends with King labelmate James Brown, whose stage show and road band influenced his own performing style and inspired him to assemble his own soul revue, the C. C. Riders, which occasionally featured as many as 14 musicians plus two female backing vocalists, the Sheer Delights.

Wayne is best known for writing the song “Last Kiss” that would years later become a hit for Pearl Jam (?!) and of course his mile high hair. Wayne spent his final days as an evangelical minister in Miami FL. passing away in 2017 at the age of 78
